after amsterdam, i flew to dublin. [my whole vacation was planned out by ryanair flight prices and places they fly into/out of.] pretty much the only reason i went there was to go to the guinness storehouse. dublin turned out to be a nice enough, fun enough place, but it really drained my wallet. [i spent 15 € daily eating out of grocery stores. and don't get me started on cigarette prices.]
after flying in, i spent a little while walking around town.
the river liffey.
if one looks closely, the decorative work on this building details the process of soap-making.

the next morning (well, early afternoon), i headed straight to the guinness storehouse. remarkably, i only had to wait in line for about three minutes.

guinness... proof of god's existence?
notice the lack of semantic hair-splitting in this country.
i love rose windows. or whatever it is they're called.

the gin palace. i had to take a picture of this. see, my american friends here in aix gave me the nickname of "gin princess," as a result of (a) me liking to drink a few gin and tonics at the beginning of a night out and (b) my using a queen elizabeth shotglass (that came with our apartment, actually) to measure said gin and tonics. [sadly, the shotglass was drunkenly broken by one of sarah-anne's friends during our apartment's party era.]
thursday, the last of my nights in dublin, my friend jocelyn (whom i've known since eighth grade) came down from belfast (where she studies abroad) for some fun. the night began with cheap screw-top shiraz from spar... and jocelyn's phone falling in a hostel toilet.
oh, no!
remembering the lessons we learned after our mutual friend jordan soaked his phone (he jumped in a pool with all his clothes on), we tried to find a bowl of rice (the rice soaks up the water, you see). sadly, the best we could do was find the hostel's only operational hand dryer. [i was not pleased with this hostel, if you couldn't tell.] this enabled the phone to work for about another twenty-four hours.
then we went out. jocelyn, being a lover of gin much like myself, suggested we go to the gin palace. we split after seeing the crowd of thrity-somethings lounging inside, and after going to the bathroom, where i took this picture:
after our disappointment with the gin palace, we headed to the george, dublin's premier gay bar. after pretending to be a couple and forking over a few euros, we were in, good to dance and drink jameson's on the rocks.
i also learned of the benefits of going to a gay bar: very few creepy hetero dudes to get hit on by. very many cool gay dudes who tell you how well dressed you are and can sing along to spice girls songs. and the ladies, well, i must radiate straight vibes or something, because none of them were interested.
shiny pink shoes, from h&m.
jocelyn took a lot of great pictures that night, but it seems that her camera got lost (perhaps after some guy at the george was joking around about keeping it... but we could have sworn she got it back). this is a bummer. she comes to hang out with me in dublin, ruins her phone, and loses her camera. we both had a good time, though!
after about two hours of sleep, i rolled out of my hostel bed, still a bit drunk, said goodbye to jocelyn, and ran to catch the bus to the airport. next stop: venice.

clearing out the backlog: saint paul de vence.
sandwiched in between my vacation updates, you might find some pictures from trips around the south of france (both with the program and with some friends of mine). this was a trip we took in february to the small medieval town of saint paul de vence, not far from nice. needless to say, the weather there was fantastic.
calder in a roundabout, near the fondation maeght (which, surprisingly, did not enthuse me all that much).
saint paul de vence from the outside.
orange trees!
amy (in the blue shirt) is too tall to fit through any of the older doors in this town. i can barely squeeze through myself!
hello, alps!
beautiful views.

vacances d'avril, étape n° 1: amsterdam.
i'm sorry i keep going so long between updates... but the weather's just too pretty here to sit inside and stare at a computer screen all day. and then there's always class and homework, too....
but i thought i'd get started on posting pictures from my two-week vacation in april. i first headed to amsterdam, to visit my friend (and lydia's former beer mule) martin, whom i met when he was doing grad study at iu.
[sadly, for those of you who remember martin's long, flowing locks and the accompanying shock we all felt when he went back home and cut it all off, i do not have an up-to-date picture of martin for you. i'll just say that he definitely has more hair than he does in his very old facebook picture.]
post-dinner at the café bern, where we drank much heineken and ate much gruyère fondue. i would like to thank the netherlands for not having instituted an indoor smoking ban... yet.
cat! this cat actually belongs to martin's school, the universiteit van amsterdam. martin is essentially an ra in a dutch dorm. not only is his dorm nicer than french dorms, it's nicer than american dorms!
so many canals... amsterdam is even more disorienting than venice.
i forget where this bus was from... latvia? lithuania? somewhere else bizarre?
a floating chinese restaurant! but i didn't eat there.
centraal station. do not go to the coffeeshops in this neighbourhood; they're all extremely touristy.
one night, we hopped on the train and went to a dj battle in utrecht. this was great fun, as was the club we ended up at afterwards -- a place called ekko, which was basically a bigger and better version of the sunset here in aix.
i think we took the train back to amsterdam at... what? three in the morning, maybe?
a replica of the amsterdam. i actually got to go on it for free -- i happened to be in amsterdam during museum weekend (which means admission to the museums is, well, free). i also went to the stedelijk museum (in its temporary location), because we all know how much i love modern art!
strange to see on this side of the pond: martin's old license plate from his car in bloomington.
after three nights in amsterdam, i hopped on a plane to dublin....
