vacances d'avril, étape n° 1: amsterdam.

i'm sorry i keep going so long between updates... but the weather's just too pretty here to sit inside and stare at a computer screen all day. and then there's always class and homework, too....

but i thought i'd get started on posting pictures from my two-week vacation in april. i first headed to amsterdam, to visit my friend (and lydia's former beer mule) martin, whom i met when he was doing grad study at iu.

[sadly, for those of you who remember martin's long, flowing locks and the accompanying shock we all felt when he went back home and cut it all off, i do not have an up-to-date picture of martin for you. i'll just say that he definitely has more hair than he does in his very old facebook picture.]

post-dinner at the café bern, where we drank much heineken and ate much gruyère fondue. i would like to thank the netherlands for not having instituted an indoor smoking ban... yet.

cat! this cat actually belongs to martin's school, the universiteit van amsterdam. martin is essentially an ra in a dutch dorm. not only is his dorm nicer than french dorms, it's nicer than american dorms!

so many canals... amsterdam is even more disorienting than venice.

i forget where this bus was from... latvia? lithuania? somewhere else bizarre?

a floating chinese restaurant! but i didn't eat there.

centraal station. do not go to the coffeeshops in this neighbourhood; they're all extremely touristy.

one night, we hopped on the train and went to a dj battle in utrecht. this was great fun, as was the club we ended up at afterwards -- a place called ekko, which was basically a bigger and better version of the sunset here in aix.

i think we took the train back to amsterdam at... what? three in the morning, maybe?

a replica of the amsterdam. i actually got to go on it for free -- i happened to be in amsterdam during museum weekend (which means admission to the museums is, well, free). i also went to the stedelijk museum (in its temporary location), because we all know how much i love modern art!

strange to see on this side of the pond: martin's old license plate from his car in bloomington.

after three nights in amsterdam, i hopped on a plane to dublin....
